Teflon
I love urban myths or common misconceptions. Here's one that was repeated in yesterday's Times:
"Teflon was one of the many spin-offs from the Space Race"
It was actually invented in 1938. Feel free to impress your friends with that and contribute any others you might know.

Supposedly intelligent people I work with keep passing round the email about deodorant causing cancer. I just roll my eyes and hit delete.
Last year Herefordshire Police passed round the one about how typing your pin number backwards into a cash machine causes it to alert the police. (Presumably in case you are being forced to withdraw money by someone)
You might think they would have checked it out first, or perhaps wondered why they had never received any cashpoint calls themselves

Hmmmm, upon further reading on Wikipedia, another Teflon fact: it's the only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick!
A-mazing.
