Junk Mail

I've just found out that whilst I was away the Royal Mail have decided to start delivering us all a mountain of junk mail.

There are two solutions to this

1) There is probably some number you can ring and waste time speaking to one of my ex pupils who will annoy you with their imbecility and then pass on your details to every direct mailing company in the World.

2) Simply collect it until you have a good sized pile and do some junk mailing of your own. If you are anything like me, shoving it all through the letterbox of your local sorting office once a week will give you no end of quiet satisfaction.

I open them and use the reply-paid envelope inside to send back to them junk from some other junk mailer - with my name removed, of course!

There was a story recently of a postal worker who told people on his round how they could opt out of the junk mail that Royal Mail send. When 70 people in one area suddenly asked to opt out, Royal Mail did some digging, found out this guy had been giving this advice and promptly suspended him.

This story was then published in the Daily Mail and other papers, thereby publicising the method even more than this guy had done. I expect that the Royal Mail has been inundated with requests to stop junk mail. I've sent my request off!

If you are fed up with junk mail, you need to register with the Mail Preference Service and also write to Royal Mail and ask to opt out of Door to Door mail.

thing is stan (stan still), if we all send off our 'no thanks' stuff to the royal mail, well, yes, we may end up with a little less junk mail.
but the inevitable consequence of that is that the royal mail will lose the income it currently generates from the people who ask them to deliver this rubbish.
and the inevitable consequence of that is that our regular postal charges will go up. and up. and up.
personally, i just bin it and grin to myself in the knowledge that market research companies/credit card providers/kids' outfitters are subsidising my post.

Remember that the post office only delivers this junk mail (and get paid for it). Its the senders who hold responsibility for posting it in the first place and are paying the postoffice for this service. Remember to save any pre-paid envelopes and send them back either empty of with the original contents. The post Office will get paid for this delivery too all at the expense of the original sender. Oh - and if you can time it so they are posted to the originator on a weekend - they have to pay the post office even more.

Bin the rest in the recycling bin.

Anonymous above. I like your style I might start doing that.

I was thinking that if you had a service/product you wanted to advertise it might be worth bunging a leaflet in every pre-paid enevelope you get.

At least that way you know someone has to open it at the other end, they might even read it. Something you couldnt be sure of if you sent them to any other address.

I say...
I fully agree with all of the above, except for the last sentence. Don't just bin the rest; re-seal it (with the contents turned around so that your name and address no longer show through the window), mark it "return to sender", and put it back into the system with the others!
