School Sport

The current government heavily criticised the previous one for allowing 200 state schools to sell off their playing fields to developers in ten years.

The previous government is now criticising the current one for allowing 20 schools to do the same in the last two years.

When the grammar school I went to "turned comprehensive" in 1977, and was reincarnated as a sixth-form centre, the playing fields (which in the 1960s were quite extensive) were all sold off and are now a housing estate. I don't know how much they were sold for, but as a prime spot in Leamington Spa it must've been a nice little earner. I hated games/sport at school and always did my best to get out of it, but that's not the point.

The sport issue isn't initially about money, it's about whether or not we believe it's a role for schools and therefore teachers (as the private sector thinks) or not, as the Scandanavians and East Europeans do with their external sports provision for teenagers.
Working on the very first BSF project in Bristol, I was staggered to find myself in one school which sat in acres and acres of unused playing fields that in the private sector would have been packed every afternoon, but which at this school were basically out of bounds.

Do you want school PE to be a vehicle for improving the nation's fitness, or increasing the nation's glory? The two are not wholly incompatible but it really depends on the school. At mine we have a majority of ethnic minority girls who may be persuaded to participate in an activity that is strictly unobserved single sex, AS LONG AS there are facilities for the private removal of sweat, and the repair of make-up and hair, which they expend a lot of time on as their cultural expectations are attraction and marriage; and which is not ina any way current;y addressed via timetabling. 20 mins for 30 girls at various stages of development to share 4 showers and two mirrors with is not going to cut it. They woud - and in their position I would too - prefer a 40 min detention at the end of school.

I utterly detested sport at school. I still have some low self esteem issues from it. I was overweight and clumsy as a child and teenager. I lost the weight as an adult (not by sport). I can't think of any positive thing school P.E or swimming did for me.
Since then I live in Israel. Here P.E is considered a very minor unimportant thing in a lot of the education system, compared to Britian. I have heard that in Holland they do not have P.E at all in schools. I would argue that sport and physical fitness is resposibilty that the parents should be expected take care of for the kids themselves, like they take care of feeding and clothing them. Taking a walk or following a cheap TV exercise program doesn't actually cost money like food and clothing does.

From the online Torygraph today:

"Some 10,000 playing fields were sold off between 1979 and 1997 under the Tories. But under Labour, between 1997 and 2010, only 226 were sold. "

What was it that Gradgrind said about "facts, and only facts", Frank?

Education is just another money spinner for politicians. They basically all end up doing the same thing under a different name.

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say hich was which."

...and this surprises you about politicians in what way exactly?

Education can not be for sale. Where
a school's property is for sale,
education is not valued.
