Cheltenham Races

Just to prove that I'm always behind the times, here's a story that's ten days old.

They spent £1624 of their training budget on a day out at the races. What an absolute disgrace. They should have wasted it on Inset training instead.

That money could have been used to hire a group of odd looking people from the Council to hold some 'Diversity Training'. It could have funded half a dozen experts with large earings and funny shoes to conduct a workshop on 'Gender Awareness', 'Behaviour Management' or 'Different methods of Learning'.

Instead they chose to blow the lot on the gee-gees.

I hope they had a great day out and well done to the Head for showing some initiative. If it had been me, I'd have spent next year's training budget on champagne as well.

Good on them! Teaching is a very very tough job and especially if the school has had extra problems recently. I applaud them, staff need rewards and the opportunity to let go every once in a while.

Just because things don't always go according to government guidelines doesn't make it wrong. I think more schools should do this as it woulde certainly help boost spirits in a lot of schools.

We had a training day where the head brought in a group of alternative therapists to give us samples of their specialities.
I discovered Bowen Therapy and found it so good that a 30 year old back pain has gone after only three treatments. Just in time for retirement too.
I like my head teacher a lot

One would hope that the Council will provide details of how much their investigation costs.

We had salsa dancing last year...along with time management, stress relief techniques etc. All part of the Council's caring for their workers. Funny how the local press then whinged but forgot to tell us about they days out their editor had at the Edinburgh tattoo etc etc paid for by their company ie shareholders or sponsors....

"The chair of the school's governors, county councillor Shaun Parsons, said: "I am very concerned over this issue. Taxpayers' money should be used for the purpose it is intended for.""

So what exactly is his complaint? I had understood, from long years of observation, that the whole purpose was to get through gargantuan amounts of taxpayers money, any which way that can be dreamed up. If it can't be spent, then waste it. Or embezzle it. Or do anything, just as long as you get rid of it before the next bucketful comes along. There will aleways be plenty more, so you have to get cracking.

In that context, a day at the races is just as good a way of burning through a pile of money as any other. I would also suggest taking the opportunity to blow a few more thousands by laying it on a certain loser. Come on Shaun, use your imagination.

So what exactly is Blair doing with tax payer's money on his 'farewell' tour?
As far as local councillors are concerened all money spent on them (and most by them)is a waste! It will be interesting when the results of the investigation show that morale in the school has improved and at a relatively low cost...will they then have an investigation as to why they wasted money having an investigation

We have just found out that our budget for training for the revised curriculum in NI has been spent on sub cover!!

We have a lot of subs in due to absenteeism, sickness etc. We have a lot of this because our SMT is very poor at their jobs and do not support our staff.

Obviously the money was not ring fenced for training but just handed to our Dear Leader. There has been some speculation that he only got the job because of the machinations of the clergyman who was our Chair of BoG.

A trip to the horses would have been a lot better than any of the INSET days I've been on.

Do they really think that just because they say it is so that we are going to believe it?

I had to laugh when the cabinet minister said he was horrified at how taxpayers money had been spent/wasted on this outing.

Pot kettle black spring to mind.

Wish I could get the taxpayer to pay for me to close my business for the day and go to the races. Oh no, I have to work to pay for those lazy spongers to have a day off instead...

Well, I'm certain the teachers did learn a lot about diversity and gender issue at the races:
A horse's colour doesn't affect its performance on the track. Horses of all colours are treated the same. No horse receives extra input because of the colour of their coat. Coat colours do not serve as an excuse for under-performing nor are they seen as the reason for over-performing. When male horses misbehave, they are made into geldings (hmmmm... now THAT's an interesting one!!). Same goes for male horses that wouldnd produce good offspring. Female horses who wouldn't produce worthwile offspring don't get to the stallieons and don't reproduce. Horses that don't do as they are told get a whipping. Horses that bite/kick/spit at their riders get punished. And who thought there was nothing to gain for teachers during this trip????? Think again!!!

Ha! What an excellent idea for our end-of-term college bonding session. There are some good races on in Dubai soon, so they could be the next destination.

Actually, many years ago, when I used to teach English to foreign adults at a language school in London, I took a class to the local bookies one afternoon for a bit of "real English". Most of them loved it - especially those who won a few quid - but there were a few wet blankets who skulked all the time and complained later that they should have been doing grammar in the classroom, instead of watching the nags jumping over the sticks. Miserable sods!!

Wow! I've read several of the entries on your blog and I've got to say that I thoroughly enjoy your writing. Very funny stuff.

I'm adding you to my blogroll! Hope you don't mind the heading I'm giving you. I will probably move it later to a section dedicated just to fellow writers. :)

The school governor's nightmare...the thought that sometimes and somewhere, some teachers might occasionally be enjoying themselves
