Great State Schools and The Daily Jolly

Re Great State Schools- not a single person has named one yet.

I know we have this culture in state teaching, of never naming and shaming, (which is why we are in such a mess) but I can't even manage to get anyone to name a school that they think is great!

Re 'The Daily Jolly' Yes I might have to change the name!

surprised St Aidan's in Harrogate hasn't been nominated.

As good state schools I suggest Clarendon House & Chatham House in Ramsgate. But then I am not a teacher and therefore have no innate aversion to naming and shaming.

Magdalen College School, Brackley, Northants.

Well behaved pupils (from the viewpoint of sharing High Street Brackley with them from time to time) and very approachable from a parents point of view.

Howard of Effingham, Therfield... local to me. Both very good.

The type of person reading this blog probably aren't the types to go naming schools (there aren't often bad ones mentioned either) but that doesn't mean they're not there.

Excellent state schools:

Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton

The Abbey School Reading, Reading

Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls

Colchester Royal Grammar School

Lancaster Girls' Grammar School

Reading School

The Tiffin Girls' School, Kingston upon Thames

Chelmsford County High School for Girls

Wolverhampton Girls' High School

Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone

Colyton Grammar School, Devon

King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, Birmingham

King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford

Newport Girls' High School

St Bede's College, Manchester

King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, Birmingham

Colchester County High School for Girls

Queen Mary's Grammar School, Walsall

Wilson's School, Wallington

All achieve 100% a*-c including English and Maths. There are more but I wouldn't want to ruin the cynicism...

We could name and shame a few anonymously. Would you be sued?

All those schools are selective!

PS - all those follow some sort of selective entry procedure.

Dunno if there's online info for value added score as that would be the real test for the quality of teaching and learning etc.

"all those follow some sort of selective entry procedure."

well that rules out the entire private education sector ...

Royal Grammar School, High Wycome
Dr Challoners Grammar School, Amersham

I'd second RGS and Challoners.

I don't see the relevance of selective entry counting against them though. They're state schools and great - requirement met!

The Gateway Acadamy, Grays, Essex is a great school.

With dedicated staff, a great head teacher, super pupils and tremendous environment nearly perfect? Well very nearly...our small village school is great and getting even better - I nominate
Wrangle Primary School
