Shannon Matthews

Thankfully Shannon Matthews is now back safe and sound (ie not with her mother).

Well done to the Police for finding her, after tirelessly searching 2431 residences in the area. Apparently more than two thirds were occcupied by her mother's partners, ex partners, uncles, cousins and stepfathers. (Some by all of the above).

Constructing the family tree was the most difficult part of this operation, requiring many hours on the new Police Supercomputer. Unfortunately the three CDs on which it was stored have already been lost by the Home Office.

Look, can somebody please do us all a favour and adopt this poor kid?

Well, at least when she goes back to school she will get the hide and seek trophy.

nail on the head... The best thing that anyone could do would be to get the poor girl away from that family and give her some chance in life.

I think she should be sent to live with a Guardian family (geddit?!?). Let them see what a shambles they're making of the country...

On another note, I suppose the police will come in for some stick for not having had the wit to search all the houses of Shannon's "extended family" (as phrased by to the BBC). Fact is, they had started, but had only got as far as the letter D by yesterday.

From the Daily Mail website...

Indeed, Shannon's grandparents - June and Gordon Matthews - blame their daughter Karen, 32, and her partner, supermarket fishmonger Craig Meehan, 22, for the nine-year-old's terrifying ordeal.

They have disowned Karen - who has seven children by five fathers - and have questioned her parenting credentials.

Additionally, they have made sensational allegations that Shannon was so frightened of Craig, who she claimed hit her, that she ran away.

Indeed, the complicated, unconventional and many would say utterly dysfunctional family life of Shannon Matthews is almost more complex than the massive police inquiry.

It's no wonder the poor kid ran away!!

Thank God she's been found. I couldn't bear to watch the news any more in case they showed that fat lump blubbering to the camera again

I've heard that over 60 police were assigned to questioning her ex partners.

People show some compassion (and no I'm not a guardian reader) but the fact remains, regardless of whether we agree with ms Matthews family set up or not, her daughter went missing. That should be the only thing we concentrate on.

This kind of hostility has not been shown to the McCann family, and they left their children alone and without a babysitter whilst they went out to eat. The only difference here is that they are part of a traditional neuclear, middle class family with good jobs and don't live on a council estate.

It's not important that Ms Matthews has 7 children with 5 different partners, it matters that she lost her daughter and so she deserves the same kind of support and sympathy that the McCanns got, irrespective of her social standing. It's called unconditional compassion people.

Ask yourselves this if you lost a child, and you were in the same position as Ms Matthews, what kind of response would you like to get?

Thankfully, Shannon has been found and that is all that matters

"This kind of hostility has not been shown to the McCann family"

Absolute rubbish. They were criticised in both the Portugese and British press and even accused of being involved themselves.

As taxpayers we have every right to criticise this family. Our money has enabled Ms Matthews to abdicate her resposibilities and simply produce children with every passerby.

It was blatently obvious from the outset that the child has simply had an argument with one relative and ran to another. (I'm not going to use the word 'Carer' as that gives a completely false impression.)

When are we going to stop subsisidising and encouraging these people?

Before the inevitable accusations of heartlessness, I'd just like to say that my symapthies are entirely with Shannon. What chance does she have in life? Crap upbringing, crap local school and the estate from hell to provide role models, drugs and God knows what else.

sad to see another offspring of a feckless woman and a serial inseminator getting into trouble.
Why can't these women think before having kids? For them kids are just money makers. More kids equal more benefits, biger council houses, the kids are just money on legs,to fund their habits, whatever they are. Did you all see these sad people "celebrating" whan poor little Sharon was found? Of course they just got p*****, drugged themselves up and in nine months time we'll see another few poor kids born into that kind of "life. They treat their kids as a means to gain more benefits. human lifestock.

I'm betting Shannon's got her own kid by the time the Olympics are upon us...

.....if my child had been missing in such terrible circumstances for 24 days and had miraculously been found alive........ there would be absolutely nothing that would seperate me from my nine year old daughter..... I would have wanted to cling onto her for ever and never let her out of my sight. Within 24 hours Mum and Stepdad returned home, appeared reasonably calm and seem to have accepted that Shannon is in care - how can they possibly walk away and be seperated yet again from their little girl? OK a police protection order is in place - but to seperate Mum and Daughter - very strange - and if they were a loving caring family, everyone, including police and social services would have allowed Mum and daughter to be together just to hold onto each other - that is what any mum and child would want.... Shannon clearly doesn't want that - I wonder why? An unhappy homelife has driven Shannon away and into circumstances that have resulted in the biggest man hunt since the ripper........the tax payers have spent millions trying to find her - and now the family will make ££££££££ telling their story. The family deserve all the criticism that is coming their way and I am sure there is a lot more to unfold............

Lol! I was eating my sandwich as I read that, it nearly came out of my nose!

Seriously though, poor kid! let's all hope she defies her upbringing and genes and really goes for it in life!

Yes, lets hope she defies her genes, upbringing, 2000 strong 'extended family', local school and inhabitants of her estate.

Unfortunately realism rears its ugly head at this point and says that it's far more likely that she will have a turbulent life of benefits, drugs, crime, kids and partners, extending the extended family ever further.

It's very sad though. She was virtually condemned from the minute she was born.

You got it spot on there!
It does make you wonder why she isn't back with her mum, I wonder what they know that we don't?

Shannon/Maddie?

What is the difference really, apart from the outcome?

A lack of parenting in both cases, but the press are of course much happier to attack the Shannon family (rightfully IMHO), than a nice middle class professional family.

Good on the copper who made the decision for the Police Protection Order.

Not according to todays news - the McCanns have been pretty much stitched up by Express Newspapers.

It is the first time I have ever felt the need to write comments about an incident, but the Shannon Matthews case and all that is unfolding makes my blood boil....... to everyone who has suggested that we were being unfair to treat the Maddie / Shannon situation differently..... that we were judging the Matthews family because of their class......... after what has now unfolded I bet you are eating your words! The arrests that have taken place over the past few days, the stepfather for child porn, his mother and sister for perverting the course of justice / assisting the kidnapper and now the mother of Shannon who also has some involvement. ..... the family deserved all the criticism the public and press have thrown at them. Thank goodness they didn't get their hands on thousands of pounds to support the hunt.

Maddie's parents left the children alone in a hotel room ... this is something that will haunt them forever....but if most parents are honest I bet they have left their children sleeping peacefully in a room while they had some adult time. I certainly have. Dragging tired children in pushchairs around restaurants and bars in the evening is no fun for parents or children... its just a shame that incidents like the Maddie case will put a stop to Mum's and Dad's having an evening together believing their children are sleeping in what should be a safe place.

As taxpayers we continue to pay millions of pounds to pay for the hundreds of officers involved in resolving Shannon's disapearance. This time and money should be allocated to resolving real crime, not to a disfunctional fraudulent family who have lied and deceived the nation for 24 days. Outrageous - I hope the whole family and everyone involved get what they deserve behind bars ........oh and yes as tax payers we pay to keep them behind bars too.

Whilst we can all have views about these horrendous situations, it is the poor little girls involved, Maddie and Shannon that our hearts must go out to .... I just hope that they are both in a safe and happy place and that one day Maddie will return home to her warm, safe and loving home environment and wonderful Mum and Dad where she belongs. In contrast I hope that Shannon never has to return to the horrific "family" environment from whom she has escaped..... and this has nothing to do with class!

We are now told that the mother was claiming benefits of £400 per week to support her and her 4 children. I know many people who work more than 40 hours per week for much less than that. What a disgusting country we live in.No wonder immigrants are coming over in droves when they read stories like this. I also know of many pensioners who have fought for this country who would love to be able get half of that amount plus all the benefits that go with it

The family of Shannon Matthews are very obviously vermin of the highest order mouching from a society where is is becoming increasing difficult for honest working people to make ends meet. While they have this tramp in custody they should sterilize her to prevent her breeding any more.

On a serious note and in response to a previous post I have never left my children while on holiday to 'have some adult time'. Holidays are for the family and real parenting is about taking responsibility not hoofing off down the pub at the first opportunity and doing it repeatedly.

The McCanns are paying the price for poor parenting and I genuinely do feel sorry for them. If the mother of Shannon Matthews lived in the States she would be in a trailer as they wouldn't let scum like her live in a normal decent area. It says a lot for government policy that scrounging trash like her can be allowed to live along side people who have to work for a living. I do not consider myself right wing however stories like this make my blood boil.
