Daily Sport

I think this is a great idea. Five hours sport a week is just what many teachers need.

Oh hang on a minute, it's for the kids. Well, that will be a good thing too. I know I harp on about it, but exercise really does work wonders for their behaviour.

Mind you whether it actually happens or not is a different matter. Halfway down the article we hear about the 'Competition Manager' which sounds like another dodgy made up taxpayer funded job (yes, I have applied to be one).

Wonderful!! Even more hours taken away form proper subjects such as Maths, Sciences and Languages. I bet these sport lessons will concentrate on useful skills such as rap dance , hiphop and such stuff.

My first reaction was that he must have gone to a public school - but no, he went to a comprehensive! Elite boarding schools have always had an emphasis on sports - tire the kiddiwinks out so that they're less likely to cause any problems in the evenings or on weekends.

Is this going to be something added to the school day? That's the in thing in the USA right now - the 'extended' school day. Amazingly, they've found some school districts where the teachers rave about how fantastic it is to work longer hours!

It might be about fuirther institutionalizing children.."wraparound care" as they had in the former Soviet Block. Minimize parental input , maximize state input.

As long as they are doing 'real' sport rather than snooker for example (which is an option in Games at my school beleive it or not) and the time isn't being taken from the 'real' subjects then I'm in favour of it. I think it would really benefit the kids now that so many of them do no exercise anywhere else.

Let's be honest, teachers in general are a miserable bunch who would oppose just about anything!

It's the usual story. Great idea, no details, abandoned next week

What is 'real sport' ?

Real Sport' is any sport or game that involves some sort of exercise. ie running, football, rugby, cricket, swimmimg... but not Pool, Darts or Ten Pin Bowling!

One reason for it is to try and get kids interested in exercise and a healthy lifestyle after they leave school so they don't all turn into spherical adults.
