Bad Science, Great Sales Opportunities!

Having taken inspiration from the decline in Science Education and the site http://www.badscience.net/ I will shortly begin selling my patented WIFI radiation shields to schools across the land. I also hope to install my health giving 'Penta water' vending machines, homeopathic crisps and anything I can think of with the word 'detox' in it.

Heads are queueing up to avail themselves of my consultancy service where for a not so small fee, I can detect whether your school was built on a Ley Line. If this turns out to be the case then you will no doubt wish to invest in my 'Positive Ion Generator' which will counteract any ill effects.

One Science Department has already asked me to come along and demonstrate how I can re align my chakras.

I can't resist correcting a teacher. I think you meant Ley line not Lay line see here.

So long as all the stuff is PC, not tested on plants or animals, fair trade, eco-friendly, solar-powered, sugar-free, salt-free, gluten-free, contains no traces of nuts and is carbon-neutral, free of E-numbers and additives and approved by Jamie Oliver fine!!
count me in, I'm a customer.

Hi Frank, I've appreciated your comments on the apparent future fate of science in the [world] curriculum, and I thought you might get charge out of this note (from my side of the pond) on the Pharyngula blog...

It's kind of embarrassing.

Somehow that link http://mondaymorningpower.blogspot
doesn't come up.

You forgot to include amending the scienec curriculum to replace evolution with intelligent design, Frank. And let's teach free energy machines in physics, while we're about it...

Mr Chalk spare a thought for those of us who are still at school.

My Science teacher is so thick you would not believe it. My mate winds her up by asking questions like "How old is the Earth Miss? and what's inside a proton?" She just doesnt have a clue. She just says that we dont need to know that.My dad can answer these sort of questions and he just shakes his head when I tell him things like this.

For God's sake. If it doesn't feature in a dumbed-down GCSE exam, WHY on earth should a science teacher know about it?

Anonymous said...

Maybe because the NC is the bare minimum that should be taught to kids, not an upper limit.
Also heaven forbid a science teacher knows their subject and encourages their pupils to explore other areas of interest.

The Science and Maths teachers under 30 at our place are full of ideas about 'development', differentiation' etc. but are alarmingly short of knowledge about their own subject. Older teachers constntly hear the pupils say:

'I asked Miss X but she said she'd have to look it up' Do you know?'

I'm not talking about detailed knowledge of the interior workings of a particle accelerator, but fairly basic and general questions.

We got ones like that rog.

They're also really good at claiming the credit for work done by support staff.

I'm the 21:35 anonymous. I forgot to say that my Maths teacher can't do any problem that isn't in the teaxtbook. (Which she has the answers to)

I reckon we get short changed in the Comprehensie system. Do all the clever ones get jobs in the Private Schools?
