Jamie's Dream School

I only watched a few minutes of tonight's episode and found it excruciating.
Sorry about the lack of posts- rumours that I have been appointed Libya's Minister for Tourism are completely untrue. I'm actually working on a new book.

Provisionally entitled "Education- My Part In Its Downfall" I'm toying with the idea of publishing it solely on Kindle and selling it for just £3.79. Your views would be appreciated.

Not keen on the Kindle idea as it would mean the book would cost me £114.79.

I'm not keen either. I have just read your first book and thoroughly enjoyed it as it said everything that I, as a teacher, wanted to say. However kindle would be innaccessible to me as I don't have one. Maybe an ebook?

Mr Chalk, I'll buy your book, whether published for Kindle or in a more traditional format, having hugely enjoyed the first one.

What about a middle way such as lulu.com.

If you publish just on the Kindle, that will be the impetus for me to get an iPad with the Kindle reader. Please go for it!

Like your last book, I'd buy it on the kindle. I'm highly unlikely to buy a paper copy, though it obviously causes me no pain if a pper version exists.

You can read a Kindle eBook on your PC using the free Kindle reader. There's also a free Kindle app for iPhone, which is how I generally read eBooks.

So there's no need to buy a Kindle to read a Kindle eBook, you just need to buy the book.

Kindle version - Yes please (in time for school holiday reading would be great!

I watched a bit of Dream School. I was trying to calculate the cost of buying all the resources (photographic equipment, dead pigs, jousting poles et al) that they've used in the series so far to 'engage' the disaffected youth but I gave up at a trillion pounds.

Anyway, I like books. I spend to much time looking at screens - usually when I'd rather be teaching but knowing that if I fail to check the pointless school emails twice a lesson my mailbox will fill and I'll be there until midnight dealing with a mahoosive backlog (by sending pointless replies).

Do Kindles have printers?

'too much', before the pedants get started.

That head master reminds me of every spineless 'hide in the office' HT I've every encountered.

Haven't got a kindle, I bought your first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I just prefer to have books to read and re-read that are also safe if they fall in the bath!I've got a bit frustrated when I see a book on Amazon and it's only on Kindle - even if it's the way the publishing industry's going.

Also - on raising the pension age. Can we have a 'the oldest (still efficient) teacher you know' poll?

Ironic that some public servicers get early retirement on 'physical' grounds but the stress - with the resultant physical symptoms - of teaching goes ignored.

I read somewhere that ex-teachers snuff it sooner after retirement than any other profession (excepting stuff like miner=emphysema etc). I'm 'middle-aged' and f*cked already... and even though I still love teaching and have a passion for it (the teaching - not the rest)... keep going beyond 60?

They're having a larf.

Whilst I can't condone Starkey calling that lad fat, I have to say I agree with everything else he has said in terms of discipline and respect for teachers. He has been spot on, they are pretty much feral and yobbish. Look at how they behaved when they went to the theatre, absolute disgrace and I don't blame the other people for getting angry.

Also, I thought it was extremely telling when the HT was watching the footage of Starkey's first lesson, not the fat comment but the bit right at the start, where Starkey was basically telling them how it is and giving them some home truths. He was laying down the ground rules and trying to establish his authority and rightly so. The HT sat there shaking his head and moaning because Starkey wasn't being child centred. He wasn't doing what probably every other teacher these young people have had did, he wasn't pandering to them and saying I'll adjust to you; he was telling them that basically as he was in charge and the one with the knowledge they had better get in step with him, which is how it should be.

The problem is that we have given our young people far too many adult freedoms and expectations and now they think that they are equal to adults, which they are not. Starkey comes from a time and a background where respect and authority was ascribed, especially within school and that was the way of things and you don't argue with it. This is how it should be.

Unfortunately the cultural left have destroyed all that and encouraged children to see themselves as being equal to their elders and betters. Added to which we now have the cult of the angelic child, whereby you can't punish children because that is wrong and basically they can do no wrong. Consequently, that is why our schools are in such a mess.

The other excellent point about this programme is that it highlights how vocational/practical children are not suited to academic education. These kids have loved the practical stuff, but can't cope with more traditional academic subjects. This just proves what I've said all along that academic and vocational kids should not mix and you can't have a "one size fits all" comprehensive approach. You can't ever have equality of outcome you will always have elites and those who are at the bottom, that is life, but far better to accept that and allow excellence to flourish in much broader terms from all social classes than to keep it as the reserve of those who can send their kids to private school.

Bring back selection by ability and having good grammar and technical education and more of our young people will stand a far better chance.

1 - I'd not want to read a book on my phone, PC or any other electronic device. I only use them for emergency backup when I don't have enough pockets to carry a real piece of chopped-up tree ;)

2 - Couldn't agree with Cheeky Chappy more. Disciplining kids these days is nigh on impossible without very strong parental support which is frequently lacking. Not in all cases, to be fair. We have some wonderfully supportive parents. Sadly, we also have some kids who despite this are pretty much uncontrollable.

Part of me believes wholeheartedly in a fully comprehensive education system, but flexibility as the kids get older is certainly a wonderful idea. However, that comes down to finances and intelligent planning - neither of which successive governments have seemed capable of supplying.

I bought a book that could be downloaded and read on the pc screen, but I am not that keen on Kindle.

I agree with Cheeky Chappy and laying down the ground rules. At our school, a few teachers couldn't understand why some of our worst kids were excelling at army cadets. It's a no-brainer - at cadets the rules are clear cut and the same rules apply to everyone. Why can't we have that at school?

I only ever ask myself one question: would they be doing that if the inevitable and swift consequence was a ruler across their hand?

You can't make kids feel or show respect. You can MAKE them practise courtesy. You can't make them enjoy or engage with the school menu. You can MAKE them endure it without ruining it for everyone else.

But only by making it not worth their while. Why anyone thinks an understanding chat or an optional detention will achieve that is beyond me.

Please publish a paper version as well, I love the feel of a book in my hands and a kindle just doesnt feel the same.I know I'm a bit old fashioned but I own 5000 books, so I guess I know what I like!

Hi Frank, I loved "It's Your Time You're Wasting," and I'd definitely read a sequel. I'm not sure about a Kindle only copy, but I'd certainly buy an ebook through your blog.

My kids have told me that their Dad and they have got me a Kindle for Mother's day. I will order your first book a.s.a.p. as all the reviews have made it sound great. As a soon-to-be-leaving teacher of a few years I've decided I've had enough. I end up feeling guilty that those nice kids you talsk about are not getting what they want and deserve due to a few individuals who spoil it for them. I'm not a brillaint teacher but I do OK. I think my skills are better suited elswhere. Looking forward to your first book and the new one. Hope it makes me smile.
